Kath’s bio.: “I am a nature photographer from Assaria KS. It is a very small town in the center of the U.S., in the center of the state, the sunflower state. I was reared on a farm a mile from town. Some wheat. Some corn. Some alfalfa. Some feeder cattle. Usually 500 feeder lambs each fall. A milk cow. Numerous chickens. And always a collie or two. I can still recall the smell of wet wool of a newborn lamb in a cardboard box butted up against the heating stove in our living room.
I was the last to enter the family. It was the 50’s. Everyone had nicknames. There was Beezle, just a year older than I; people thought we were twins. Then came Bobbi, my only sister sibling – truly an angel. Then came Bruno, a sweet little boy with big brown eyes and a smile to light up the room. And finally Trickie Dick, the oldest and one who gave us our nicknames. Mine was Froman, possibly named after a movie star by the name of Jane Froman. My given middle name is Jane. That makes sense. I inherited my father’s love for the land and nature. When I took an interest in digital photography about 12 years ago, I studied other’s photography online. My heart always came back to the super close-up shots of insects. I purchased a macro lens. I was obsessed with the fine details, textures, and quirky mannerisms of all sorts of insects. I would try to identify and study each one that I had captured. I was and still am in awe that God would so intricately design such an insignificant part of nature. And yet each seems to have their part in the ecosystem. However, one that baffled me is the luna moth. The ornate detail of their wings is like very fine embroidery. It was intriguing to me to learn that they have no mouth parts. Their only purpose in life is to reproduce, and guarantee survival of their species. They live about a week. It is a rarity and joy to spot one.
My photography journey has taken me down the red dirt roads, the roads less traveled, the roads not taken by most. My favorite memories of subjects recorded in digital are as follows: INSECTS: praying mantids; dragonflies; swallowtails. FLOWERS: calla lilies; poppies; tulips; anemones. ANIMALS: horses; dogs; cats; frogs. PEOPLE: Jane Goodall; Jack Hanna; Mikhail Gorbachev.”
